Newmarch was one of the first scholars of the West to study the music of
Eastern Europe. She lived in Russia and studied under Stasov, which was a
mixed blessing; her book is, according to Richard Taruskin, “a mirror of the
prejudices... of Vladimir Stasov, surely one of the most partisan and biased
‘historians’ that ever lived.” With that in mind, one can make some use of this
book for personal details and unusual information, notably about Rimsky-
    Korsakov. Index.

tion, reception, publications, and bibliography. For leading composers there is
also musical analysis. Index of titles (in German only) and names.
