The first opera was seen in 1736. Principal houses were the Mariinskii Teatr (1860,
replacing an earlier structure, renamed the Kirov—see full name in #2660—in 1935,
renamed Marinskii Teatr in 1991) and the Mikhailovskii (1833, rebuilt in 1859,
renamed the Malyi Opernyi Teatr after the Revolution). A theater for comic opera
opened in 1927. The NGDOarticle on the city is informative with regard to the his-
tory of these theaters. For details there are several useful works in Russian:

A popular, illustrated history of the theater known for its comic opera produc-
tions. Includes a chronology, with casts, 1929–1971. No index.

    Not seen. Library of Congress record indicates it has illustrations and a six-
    page bibliography. A coffee-table book of illustrations, Slovenskeho Narod-
    neho Divadlo(Bratislava: Slovenske Vyd. Krasnej Literatury, 1960; 522p.)
    was not seen; Kaufmansays it has a chronology 1920–1960, without casts.
    Several bibliographies by Juraj Potúcek are of use for references to operatic
    matters; they are identified in Duckles4.340–4.342.
