Geneva (Genève)


The Grand Théâtre, so named in 1910, was opened in 1879.

Vaud is the southwestern canton that includes Lausanne, Geneva, and Montreux.
There is a good history of its music:

Zurich (Zürich)


The famous auditorium of the city is the Tonhalle, used for concerts. The Stadttheater
(new Opernhaus Zürich, opened in 1984) is the venue for opera.

Not seen. Kaufmandescribes it as a volume issued to observe the opening of the new
theater. It gives a history of opera in the city as well as of the new house. Color illus-
trations; little on the musical aspects.


Ukraine (Ukraïna)


The country declared its independence in 1991. Earlier music literature identifies it as
the Ukrainskaia Sovetskaia Sotsialisticheskaia Respublika, or Ukrainskaia SSR. Nearly
