Index of Subjects

Citations are to entry numbers. An asterisk following an entry number indicates that
there is material about the subject in the text after that entry. The distinction between
the headings “Opera” and “Operas” may not be immediately apparent. “Opera” and
its subdivisions are for materials about opera as a genre, and “Operas” and its subdi-
visions are for materials about individual operas.
In general, the headings in the subject index are also used as subheadings under
the names of composers, but the composer entries are modified in accordance with the
publications about each person. Entries for cities are listed under their countries.
Alphabetizing is word by word: Martin y Soler, Vicente, before Martini, Jean-
Paul Egide. Compound names and hyphenated words are treated as one word. Initial
articles and diacritics in all languages are ignored in alphabetizing.
