Index of Authors and Main Entries
Citations are to entry numbers. An asterisk following an entry number indicates that
there is material about the person or title in the text that follows that entry. This list
includes the names of sole authors and of those whose names appear first among sev-
eral (joint) authors on a title page. (Names of other joint authors, whose names are not
first on the title page, are included in the Index of Secondary Authors.) Composite
works of various kinds, which are cited by title rather than by an author or editor, are
the “main entries” that also appear. Those main entries are the only title entries given in
the index.
Collaborative works for which an author has the primary entry (name being first
on the title page) appear ahead of works for which that person is sole author.
Alphabetizing is word by word:
Berg, Alban
The Berg Companion
Berg, Karl Georg Maria
Berger, Christian
As those items indicate, initial articles in all languages are ignored in alphabetizing. In
compound surnames, any apostrophes and spaces are also ignored in alphabetizing;
that is, the names are treated as single words:
Dalayrac, Nicolas
D’Albert, Eugen
Dallapiccola, Luigi
Damrosch, Walter
D’Annunzio, Gabriele
Da Ponte, Lorenzo
Diacritical marks in all languages are also ignored in alphabetizing. Numerals file
ahead of words:
50 años de opera en el Palacio de Bellas Artes, 1934–1984, 2598
150 Jahre Theater in Zürich, 2698
300 Jahre Oper in Hamburg: 1678–1978, 2390
