A splendid picture book, covering 55 productions given at the Paris Opéra.
Liebermann was manager there from 1971 to 1980, after achieving fame as
Intendant at Hamburg, 1959–1973. For each work treated here there are
details of casting and staff, with perceptive commentaries. Some of the less
common operas included are Ariane et Barbe-Bleue, Erwartung, Intégrale,
Marchand de Venise, Moses und Aron, Platée, Tom Jones, and Véronique. - Lumley, Benjamin. Reminiscences of the Opera.London: Hurst & Blackett,

As manager of Her Majesty’s Theater, 1841–1852 and 1856–1859, Lumley
was at the center of operatic life in London. This is a personal, emotional
account of his activities (crises, mostly), involving the great composers and
singers. Invented conversations impinge on credibility; no notes or index. - Mapleson, James Henry. The Mapleson Memoirs, 1848–1888.New York:
Belford, Clarke, 1888. xi, 329p. Reprint, New York: Appleton-Century-Crofts,
Mapleson was an impresario in London, 1861–1889 (Drury Lane, Her
Majesty’s, Covent Garden), and then in America until 1897. This is a chatty,
sometimes entertaining chronicle of his London adventures, often more imagi-
nary than factual. The reprint is abridged and annotated by Harold Rosenthal
and is much preferable to the original. It includes appendixes of interviews,
peer observations, and a list of persons mentioned with brief identifications. A
list of Mapleson’s English premieres; name and title index.

New York: Dover, 1968. xxxi, 442p. ML429 .M32 A3.
This edition incorporates Crotchets and Quavers(1855) and Sharps and Flats
(1890) and offers a new introduction by Charles Haywood plus an index.
Maretzek was one of those colorful impresarios of the Golden Age, in contin-
ued confrontation with his “rapacious” singers, creditors, and tricky competi-
tors. His account deals with a long period (1848–1890) in New York, where
he managed the Academy of Music and other companies. Much of it is chatter
