THE KAPLAN 4-STEP METHOD FOR READING COMPREHENSION
You’ve probably realized by now that Kaplan has a 4-Step Method for all of the question types on the SHSAT. The point of this is
that it is in your best interest to approach the test as a whole and the individual sections systematically. If you approach every
passage the same way, you will work your way through the Reading Section efficiently.
The Kaplan 4-Step Method
Like the methods for the other question types, the Kaplan 4-Step Method for Reading questions requires you to do most of your work
before you actually get around to answering the questions. It’s very tempting to read the questions and immediately jump to the
answer choices. Don’t do this. The work you do up front not only saves you time in the long run, but it increases your chances of
avoiding the tempting wrong answers.
- Read the passage.
- Decode the question.
- Research the detail.
- Predict the answer and check the answer choices.
