  1. (B) Counterconditioning lies at the heart of systematic desensitization. Counterconditioning is a
    type of classical conditioning that involves replacing one’s initial reaction to a stimulus with a new
    reaction. Systematic desensitization is often used to treat phobias by replacing the fear response to
    the stimulus with a relaxation response. Flooding is based on extinction. REBT and stress
    inoculation are cognitive therapies, and token economies make use of operant, as opposed to
    classical, conditioning principles.
