- (A) The fact that students read more books in the summer but fewer books in the fall is probably
due to the overjustification effect, the finding that extrinsic rewards can undermine intrinsic
motivation. Students who previously read because they liked to read may have come to think they
read for the prizes and not because they liked reading. As a result, when the prizes are withdrawn,
they no longer had a reason to read and therefore may have read less.
