South
America
Earth’s fourth-largest continent lies mostly in
the southern half of the world. It has tropical
rain forests, dry deserts, grassy plains, and high,
snowy mountains. The many different habitats
means that a variety of amazing animals can
make South America their home.

Amazon rain forest
The winding Amazon River flows
through the enormous rain forest
that shares its name. In addition
to producing a fifth of the planet’s
oxygen, this rain forest is home
to an astonishing amount of
plants, mammals, birds, and fish.
Pantanal
The Pantanal is a wetland
wonderland. With flooded
grasslands and tropical
forests, it is home to
thousands of birds, fish,
and reptiles. Mammals
also live here, such as
the plant-eating capybara,
which hides from predators
in the muddy waters.
