Partridges run rather than fly
away when threatened.
Hamadryas baboon
These monkeys live in troops
of up to 1,000. They spend
nights on ledges of cliffs, but
come down to the ground
each day to find food.
Arabian partridge
This partridge lives on the
ground, where it looks for
seeds, grass, and insects
to eat. The female lays
her eggs in a shallow,
scooped-out hole.
Rock hyrax
Although it looks more like a
guinea pig, the plant-eating rock
hyrax is related to the elephant.
It even grows two tiny tusks!
Caracal
Fur on the bottom
of its feet helps
the sand cat walk
over hot ground.

People of the desert, called
the Bedouin, bred this horse
to be fast, strong, and able to
withstand desert conditions.
Spadelike hooves let
this antelope walk
on the soft desert
sand with ease.
This cat can jump
10 ft (3 m) off the
ground to snatch
birds out of the air.

Arabian camel spider
The camel spider isn’t
a true spider—it’s a
different type of
arachnid, and it eats
scorpions, spiders,
and mice.
Sandfish
The sandfish is a type of
lizard that “swims” beneath
the surface of the sand using
its flipperlike feet.
Mountain gazelle
Male gazelles have
“air-cushion” fights—
they charge at each
other but stop just
before they crash.
Arabian
Peninsula
The Arabian Peninsula is a hot, dry part of the
world, and it is covered by sandy deserts. The
animals that live here have special ways of
dealing with its harsh conditions.
