DATE PALMS

Dates are an important

crop for Algeria and Tunisia.

Date palms are often grown

at oases, where water lies

close to the surface of the

desert. Here, the clusters of dates

are shown ripening beneath

polythene. Leaves from the trees

can be used for thatch and the

trunk is cut for timber.

ANCIENT RUINS

Phoenicians, Romans, and Greeks

from ancient times have all left their

mark on this part of Africa. Today,

tourists come to admire the historical

sites along the coast. These ruins

of Carthage, near Tunis, date from

146 bce, when Romans laid waste

to this city. The Romans went on to

control all of the north African coast.

The seeds from dates

can be roasted and

ground to make a

traditional date coffee.

SURVIVAL IN THE SAHARA

The Sahara Desert covers almost one-third

of Africa and is an inhospitable place to

live with high daytime temperatures and

freezing nights. The Tuareg are nomads for

whom the desert is home. Traditionally,

they keep camels for transport and to

provide meat, milk, and hides. Many

Tuareg now live in mountain areas

or dwell in the cities.

LIBYAN OIL RESOURCES

The discovery of oil and gas in 1959 brought considerable

wealth to Libya, and by 2010 oil and gas made up 95 percent

of the country’s exports. Since 2015, however, civil war, political

chaos, and low oil prices have made life hard for Libyans.
