Celebrations are an incredibly important part of


religious, public, and family life. They bring people


together, give people something to look forward to,


and generally encourage joy and high spirits.

Chinese calendar In the Chinese
calendar, each year is named after one
of the 12 animals of the Chinese
zodiac: rat, ox,
tiger, rabbit,
dragon, snake,
horse, goat,
monkey, rooster,
dog, or pig.

OWhat happens Diwali is the Festival of
Lights. People light small lamps (diyas) and put
them around their houses and gardens. They

the return of Lord Ram from exile and his
crowning as king. According to legend people
lit lamps to light his way in the darkness. The
Diwali lights also represent the “inner light”
within people, their true essence or soul.

February, just before the beginning of Lent.
OWhat happens Everyone takes to the
streets in carnival clothes, they dance or ride
on huge floats. The highlights of the carnival
are a competition between samba schools
and parading in amazing costumes in the
sambadrome.

and families all over the world get together
to celebrate events such as new babies,
birthdays, or weddings.

moon on the first day of the new
year, which falls in January-February,
and ends on the full Moon
15 days later.
OWhat happens Everyone
hangs lanterns in their windows and
dragon dances are performed in the
streets. Families celebrate with a
special meal and honor their
ancestors. Red clothes are worn,
which represent happiness.
OWhat it’s celebrating New
beginnings and the sowing of
new crops.

DIWALI RIO CARNIVAL

FAMILY CELEBRATIONS

OLent is a
Christian festival
that lasts 40 days
and 40 nights and
leads up to Easter.
Traditionally, it is
a time for fasting
and praying as Christians remember the
40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness.
