THEATER

People have been taking to the stage

for thousands of years, performing

everything from comic and tragic

plays to pantomimes, operas, and

musicals. The oldest plays were

performed in ancient Greece and

included song and dance as well

as acting. Some of their outdoor

theaters still stand today.

 THE LION
KING is a
musical play
based on the
animated
feature film by
Walt Disney.

Asian martial
arts movies
made the
names of stars
like Bruce Lee. They are famous for
elaborate stunts and fight scenes, and
increasingly for special effects.

HOLLYWOOD is a part of the city of
Los Angeles, but the word is often used to mean
the whole American movie industry.
Hollywood movies are watched all over
the world, sometimes with subtitles or
“dubbed” into other languages.

Bollywood is the name used to describe
the movie industry, which is based in
Mumbai (Bombay), India. Bollywood films
are produced in the Hindi language at a
rate of about 1,000 a year. They usually
include extravagant musical scenes.

CULTURE

Shadow plays use puppets and clever lighting
behind a fabric screen. The traditional shadow
theater of Indonesia, Wayang Kulit, is thought
to be over 800 years old.

TAKE A PICTURE

An average
Hollywood feature
film is just over 100
minutes long and uses
10,000 ft (3,000 m) of tape,
wound onto five
double reels.

MOVING PICTURES
In 1895, the Lumière brothers astounded audiences with
the first “movies,” and cinema has been a popular form
of entertainment ever since. Movies are made up of
a sequence of still images, which create the
impression of movement when they are shown in
rapid succession.
