TIMELINE OF COLONIAL AMERICA

The Jamestown settlement in Virginia
was the first permanent
English settlement in
North America.

The Mayflower pilgrims
establish a settlement at
Plymouth, Massachusetts.

 POCAHONTAS
As a young girl,
Pocahontas helped to
make peace between the
Jamestown settlers and her
HISTORY AND POLITICS Native-American tribe.

The Plymouth settlers
The Mayflower pilgrims had come
to the “New World” so they could
worship freely without
persecution. Their new
life was tough and half
of the group died from
disease or starvation
during the first winter.
However, most of the
local Native Americans
were welcoming and
showed them suitable
crops to grow.

The Thanksgiving festival now
celebrated in November in the
United States has its origins in the first
Thanksgiving feast held in the fall of
1621 by the Pilgrims and Native
Americans to celebrate their first
good harvest.
