When Mary saw
a shop for sale in
Frome, she knew it
was meant to be hers

Gretel is a seamless, A-line tank top
with a flattering cowl neck, made
with fingering sport-weight yarn. The
top is versatile,
the pattern is
quick to make and the yarn is
great value – perfect for
taking with you on holiday.
For the medium size, Gretel
requires just two skeins of
Habu Cotton Gima.

What's a perfect summer knitting project?

Our Rico Essentials Super Kid Mohair
Loves Silk yarn comes in trendy
colours and is perfect for your
knitting projects this summer. As well
as modern candy shades, you will also find fresh
pastels, like this yellow. The yarn is super-soft and at
the same time very fine,
which makes it perfect for
knitting lightweight
summer tops and pretty
patterned shawls.
Nicola Tack
Marketing Manager

Recently launched in our Smooth DK
yarn range is our Cyclamen shade. Its
rich red wine colour makes for the
ideal summer
project, like in
our new stripy sweater (pattern
5355). The unreliability of
British summer weather makes
a long sleeve jumper essential
for when the evenings are a
little on the cool side.

Knit-for-Nowt

K

nit-for-Nowt is a not-for-profit
organisation that appeals to
knitters for hand-made ‘worry
monsters’ and hand puppets, which
are used by therapists who work with
worried children and adolescents. In
Britain today there are a huge number
of young people suering through
abuse, neglect, bereavement and
neurological conditions such as autism,
or who are living in a household where
they are at risk. They are often reluctant
to articulate their worries, which can be
extremely severe, and worry monsters
and hand puppets have been found by
psychologists to be an eective way of
finding out what’s going on in their lives.

REACHING OUT
The sooner you reach a child who is
facing emotional diculties, the more
help you can oer. NSPCC figures show
that mental health referrals for under-
11s have risen a third in just three years.

‘Worry monsters’ play an important
role in helping distressed and at-risk
children and adolescents

Take time out to knit
a cute ‘worry monster’
for a worried child

That equates to 183 referrals every
school day. In 2017-18 there were
almost 35,000 requests for specialist
support. Knit-for-Nowt founder Clare
says: “Since the charity began in 2015,
we’ve seen the demand for these sorts
of items grow enormously, and we now
receive a steady stream of requests
for worry monsters and hand puppets
from across the country, which means
we now have a waiting list. I’d like
to appeal to knitters and stitchers,
wherever you live, to send in items to
Knit-for-Nowt. Worry monsters and
hand puppets are easy to knit and you
can enhance the basic pattern so that
each one is unique. Knitters have said
that it’s wonderful to be knitting items
which will ease children’s worries and
be so much appreciated.”
