YEAR IN REVIEW

“RAFFAELLO” AT THE SCUDERIE DEL
QUIRINALE, ROME
In a year of “unprecedented” everything, this
actually was. On the 500th anniversary of the
Renaissance master’s death, the Quirinale
arranged an exhibition with more than 100 of
his paintings and drawings.

“EDWARD HOPPER” AT THE FONDATION
BEYELER, BASEL, SWITZERLAND
The U.S. might be the repository of most of
the great Hoppers, but it took a Swiss eye to
make them feel fresh again.

“VIDA AMERICANA: MEXICAN MURALISTS
REMAKE AMERICAN ART, 1925-1945” AT
THE WHITNEY MUSEUM, NEW YORK
This exhilarating survey of the cross-
pollination that occurred when Mexican
artists moved to the U.S. makes a compelling
case for cultural exchange.

OUTDOOR DINING
In New York, vibrant
alfresco structures helped
bring the streets back to
life. Marea’s elegant flower-
lined patio in Midtown, the
tropical vibes of Brooklyn’s
Kokomo (pictured), and the
flag-strewn LoLo’s Seafood
Shack in Harlem all created
transportive experiences.

Using your phone is a much
more sanitary and efficient
way to order: You don’t
have to wait for the menu.
They’ve also allowed room
for enterprising innovations,
like at Parcelle Wine’s

pop-up restaurant, where a live chat feature
allowed guests to get bottle suggestions
from a sommelier via text.

MEAL KITS
Chefs have crafted a range of nifty to-go
packages, even teaming with bartenders
for takeout cocktails. The practice will
continue at places such as Fort Defiance
General Store, an evolution of its namesake
bar in Brooklyn. At San Francisco’s Atelier
Crenn, meal kits are accompanied by
instructional videos.

Taste Now

2006 KRUG CLOS DU MESNIL
The new vintage of this crystalline all-
chardonnay, single-vineyard Champagne is

the ultimate in sophisticated
elegance—my finest fizz of 2020,
and, at $1,195 a bottle, the most
expensive. —Elin McCoy

1995 VINTAGE O.F.C.
Buffalo Trace’s little-known
second luxury label makes
Pappy Van Winkle bourbon
seem like Bud Light. So
be prepared to pay for the
privilege ($2,500) to indulge
in a liquid laid down during Clinton’s first
term; only 1,500 crystal decanters are
available. —Brad Japhe

Save for Later

2010 CHATEAU HAUT-BAILLY
Violet- and cigar-scented, with
fresh tobacco and spice power,
this $150 bottle is delicious
enough to drink now, but it will
also age beautifully for the next
20 years. —E.M.

MICHTER’S 25-YEAR BOURBON
It’s been three years since
a barrel was last deemed
singularly spectacular enough
to sell, so pounce if you find
one of these 348 new bottles
anywhere near the $1,000 retail
price—they’re already seven times that on
the secondary market. —B.J.
