Discussing the Read-Aloud 10 minutes


Comprehension Questions
If students have difficulty responding to questions, reread pertinent lines
of the read-aloud and/or refer to specific images. If students give one-
word answers and/or fail to use read-aloud or domain vocabulary in their
responses, acknowledge correct responses by expanding the students’
responses using richer and more complex language. Encourage students
to answer in complete sentences. Model answers using complete
sentences for students.


  1. Inferential What is today’s lesson about?

    • Today’s lesson is about plant parts.
       Show image 2A-1: Sunflower



  2. Literal Point to the roots, stem, flower, leaves, and seeds.
    [You may wish to have students point to the plant parts on Response
    Card 1.]



  • Have different students point to the different parts of the plant.



  1. Evaluative Trace the path of water and nutrients from the soil to the
    roots, through the stems, and finally to the leaves and flower.
    [Encourage students to use core vocabulary—roots, stems, leaves, and
    flower, as well as temporal words—first, next, and finally. Call on student
    volunteers to show the path of water and nutrients through the plant, or
    have students use Response Card 1 to explain the path to their partner.]

  2. Literal What part of the plant keeps it in the ground and takes up
    nutrients and water for the plant?



  • The roots keep the plant in the ground and take up nutrients and water
    for the plant.



  1. Inferential What would happen if a plant didn’t have roots?



  • If the plant didn’t have roots, it could get blown away and it wouldn’t be
    able to get water and nutrients.



  1. Literal What part of the plant supports the plant and moves water and
    nutrients to the rest of the plant?



  • The stem supports the plant and moves water and nutrients to the rest of
    the plant.
