Where Are We? 5 minutes
Choose a different student each day to locate Egypt on a world
map or globe and identify it as a part of Africa.

Personal Connections 5 minutes
 Show image 2A-2: Cuneiform
Discuss the signifi cance of writing, using the following questions
and the image as a guide:


  • What is the name for the ancient Mesopotamian writing in the
    image? (cuneiform)

  • Is it important to write things down? Why or why not?

  • What kinds of things do you write?

  • How would your lives be different if there were no writing?


What Have We Already Learned? 5 minutes
 Show image 5A-6: Meret on the banks of the Nile
Remind students that in the previous lesson they learned about
Meret and her family in ancient Egypt. Have a student point out
Meret in the picture. Have students repeat the name Meret after
you. Ask, “Besides farming, what else was the Nile used for?”
(fi shing; transportation) Now have students describe the setting in
the previous story about Meret and her family. (a village near the
Nile River)
