Recreational fishing is big business in the United States. In 2006, nearly 40 million
anglers generated over $45.3 billion in retail sales and had a $125.0 billion impact
on the U.S. economy. The sportfishing industry created employment for over one
million people. If sportfishing were a corporation, it would rank 47th on the 2007
Fortune 500 list of largest American companies based on total sales, ahead of such
global giants as Time Warner, IBM, and Microsoft. More Americans fish than play
golf and tennis combined. (Source:American Sportfishing Association.)
