EAT FOR

RESULTS

The Mediterranean diet, which is typically
rich in nuts, seeds, fruit, veg, wholegrains
and olive oil, with some dairy, fish and red
wine, contains compounds that are known
to boost athletic performance. So
scientists at Saint Louis University in the
US wanted to see if eating this diet for just
four days made a difference to exercise
performance, compared with eating a
‘Western diet’, which is characterised by
an overconsumption and reduced variety
of refined sugars, salt and saturated
fat. The researchers found that the
‘recreationally active’ subjects were six per
cent faster when running 5K on the
treadmill after following a Mediterranean
diet. So, increase your unprocessed food
consumption if you want to be speedier!
