Contact Period: Unofficial visits, official visits, home visits,


off-campus visits, letters, email, coach-initiated phone calls,
and high school or club evaluations allowed.

evaluation Period: Coach-initiated phone calls, letters, email,


official visits, unofficial visits, and athletic evaluations at
your high school or club allowed. While a coach may watch
you play during an evaluation, the coach is prohibited from
meeting you off-campus during an evaluation. With that
rule stated, some coaches find creative methods to circum-
vent the rule.

A few years ago, I attended a summer basketball shoot-out
at a far western Chicago suburb. A Chicago public high
school junior-class blue chipper (named a McDonald’s All
American after his senior year) was playing with his high
school team at the shoot-out. The high-school’s bleach-
ers were filled with coaches from the powerful Division
I basketball programs in the country. SEC, ACC, Big Ten,
Pac Ten, and Big East conferences each had coaches in
attendance. They were there to evaluate the players and
were prohibited by NCAA rule to meet with any prospect.
However, then as now, coach-initiated phone calls to
prospects are permissible during the evaluation period.
During a game break, I wandered toward the bathrooms.
