qualifier: A prospect that has achieved the grade requirements


in the core courses while achieving the minimum acceptable
score on the ACT or SAT.

questionnaire: A document that asks a prospect for personal,


academic, and athletic information.


recruiting: The process of identifying, contacting, evaluating,


persuading, and signing prospects.


Recruiting Calendar: The annual sequence of periods during


which coaches may contact prospects by mail or telephone
and make home visits, and when prospects can officially visit
a college and sign a Letter of Intent.

Recruiting Service: A company that offers to help a prospect


by either locating schools that may match the prospect’s
interests or provide athletic and academic information about
prospects to college coaches.

redshirting: The practice of holding a player out of competi-


tion for a year. The athlete may still practice with the team.
Coaches typically redshirt student athletes so they can add
size, strength, or skill, or be in a better depth-chart position for
the next season. Injured athletes are sometimes redshirted.

representative of athletic interests: Anyone, whether or not


they have an official connection with a school, who supports
or assists the school in its recruiting efforts.

scholarship athlete: A student athlete who has been given some


form of financial aid based on athletic ability.


signing day: The NCAA designates a day that starts the period


when prospects can sign Letters of Intent. Most sports sign in
April except for football, which signs in February or during
the Early Signing Period in November.
