Glossary of Recruiting Terms 175

sport camp/clinic: Fee-based sessions during which participants

are to receive intensive and qualified coaching in their partic-
ular sport. Too often these sessions are used to attract college
coaches to evaluate blue-chip talent, with the result that the
other participants receive little coaching attention.

strung along: When a prospect is not the number-one choice

of a recruiting coach but receives the same treatment as the
prospect who is number one.

tape: A videotape that illustrates a prospect’s athletic perfor-

mance or skills.

test scores: An NCAA Division II prospect must score a 700 on

the SAT or a 17 on the ACT. NCAA Division I prospects’ tests
must be combined with their GPAs to determine eligibility.
There is a sliding scale, which can be found in your NCAA
Guide for College-Bound Student-Athletes. For the NAIA, the
requirements are 18 ACT or a 740 SAT + 2.00 GPA.

tryout: Practice episodes that demonstrate athletic potential by

measuring, weighing, or timing a prospect. They may engage
in practice-type games or scrimmages as a part of the tryout.
In NCAA divisions, only Division II can hold tryouts. NAIA
schools can also hold tryouts.

verbal commitment: The announced intention of a prospect to

accept a scholarship from a particular school. Verbal commit-
ments are not binding on prospects.

walk-on: A prospect who opts to try out for a roster position with

a college team without receiving an athletic scholarship.
