When faced with ankle-deep snow, most of us would
head for the mountains or some other picturesque
landscape. We wouldn’t necessarily stop on the way to
photograph a field of sheep. However, Stuart spotted
the potential in this scene and has captured an
engaging and rather comical shot. The fact that he’s
waited until nearly all the sheep are looking at him is
what makes the picture. If any of the front row had
turned away, much of the effectiveness would be lost.
Careful framing, so that the top of the background tree
isn’t cropped, shows consideration and an eye for detail.

What a wonderful moment captured. You can feel
the sheer power of the elephant’s presence as it takes
a much-needed dust bath. The portrait format is the
right choice in terms of composition, and the detail and
texture captured in the cloud of dust is perfect – as is
the split-second timing to freeze the curl in the trunk.
The only thing that might have helped lift this image
even higher up the leaderboard is a touch more
contrast, but that’s just a small criticism.
