A keen travel
photographer, Isabella
would love to work for
National Geographic

Isabella Smith lives in Collierville, Tennessee, USA. After being diagnosed with ADD with some
dyslexia, she realised she was much better at telling stories through photos than words. She won
Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2018. See instagram.com/fellabella.photography for more.

What are your hopes for
your photography?
For the future, I want to
continue to learn and improve
and get more confi dent with
my skills. For example, I love
street photography, but it is
really hard for me because I am
sort of shy. I would love to be
comfortable enough to be able
to ask random people if I can
take their picture.

Do you have a dream
photographic assignment?
My dream assignment is to
be a National Geographic
photographer because I love to
travel and tell stories with
photos. Specifi cally, I would
like to visit the countries where
snow leopards live and take
photos of them, to spread

awareness about their natural
habitats disappearing.

How did it feel to win Young
Travel Photographer of the
Ye a r 2 018?
I was really excited! (Even
more excited the next week
when I discovered I had won
prizes!) It has opened up
opportunities for me locally;
I was even able to get a few
paying jobs.

What advice would you
give to other young
photographers?
My advice is to learn the basic
rules of photography (the
rule of one/thirds, overall
composition, lighting) and
then try to make a picture,
not take a photograph.
