CORRECTIONS
We misreported a
few facts in our April
issue.
In our feature
“Raising the
Steaks,” we
mistakenly reported
the crop yield of
the microalgae
Tetraselmis. The
correct yield is 30
metric tons per
hectare, or about 13.
U.S. tons per acre.
In our feature
“Boldly Go,” we
stated that NASA’s
Jet Propulsion
Laboratory built the
Pioneer 10 space
probe. TRW Space &
Technology Group,
under contract
with NASA’s Ames
Research Center,
constructed the
probe.
In our feature
“Meet the T. Rex
Family,” our “Tree
of Tyranny” graphic
switched the
positions of the
clades Alioramini
and Tyrannosaurinae.
Tyrannosaurinae
should be the larger
clade.
In our story “Are
Human Astronauts
Worth It?,” we
incorrectly stated
that the Curiosity
rover is powered
by solar panels. It
actually uses nuclear
power that produces
electricity from the
heat of plutonium’s
radioactive decay.
We regret the errors.
Moral vs. Material
(“The Happiness Dilemma,” March 2019)
Maybe what evolution is telling us is that
we are looking for happiness in all the
wrong places. The examples used in von
Hippel’s article — the next mastodon,
the new car, the next raise, winning the
lottery — all play into the fallacy that
true happiness resides in the material,
the ephemeral. Ask Buddha, Aristotle
or even Thomas Jefferson. They would
probably tell us that happiness is the
result of a moral, well-lived life.

Lidar’s Past
(“A Lost World Emerges,” March 2019)
This story was very enlightening and
illustrated how light detecting and
ranging (lidar) is used to look through
vegetation and reveal details invisible
to explorers. However, I was surprised
the author didn’t mention previous uses
of this technology. In 2015, lidar was
used in Honduras for the same type of
archaeological research. In Douglas
Preston’s book, The Lost City of the
Monkey God, he details the technology
and the hardships of confirming
results with boots on the ground. He
also discusses how certain members
of the academic and archaeological
community resisted lidar’s findings.
