- In the read-aloud you heard, “Finally, Theseus convinced his
father [to let him fi ght the Minotaur].” - Say the word convinced with me.
- Convinced means persuaded to agree. When you agree with
someone after he or she has told you the reasons why you
should agree, you are convinced. - Dahlia’s mother convinced her that it is better to fi nish her
homework fi rst before going outside to play. - What are some things Theseus might have said to his father to
convince his father to let him fi ght the Minotaur?
[Ask two or three students. If necessary, guide and/or
rephrase the students’ responses: “Theseus convinced his
father to let him go by saying, ‘.. .’.”] - What’s the word we’ve been talking about? What part of
speech is convinced?
Use an Acting activity for follow-up. Directions: With your partner,
think of ways you could convince others of the following things: - Try to convince your parents to let you stay up one hour later
on the weekends. - Try to convince your friend to play a new game with you.
- Try to convince your parents to let you take art/karate/
swimming lessons. - Try to convince your teacher to let the class have lunch inside
the classroom. - Try to convince your teacher to plan a fi eld trip.
- Try to convince your parents to let you play at your friend’s
house. - Try to convince your friend to read the book you are currently
