The American flag is a symbol of our nation—our country—the
United States of America.
[Ask students if they can find an American flag in the classroom or school. Ask
where else students have seen the American flag.]
What do you see on the American flag?
[Pause for students to respond.]
You can see that the American flag is red, white, and blue. It has red
and white stripes. It also has fifty stars. Each star is a symbol for one
of the states in the United States of America.
[If time allows, have the class count the fifty stars on the American flag.]
What state do we live in?
[Place a star sticker on your state on a U.S. map.]

There is one very important city in the United States that is not in any
of the fifty states. This city is Washington, D.C.
[Point to Washington, D.C., on the U.S. map and circle it.]
Washington, D.C., is the capital of our nation, the United States of
America. It is the city where the president lives and where many
important decisions for the country are made. This city is called
Washington to honor the first president of the United States.
