  • Ask students: “Who are the two men in this image?”

    • General George Washington and Colonel Henry Knox



  • Say to students: “With your partner, try to retell what their clever plan
    was to trick the British army.” Allow one minute for students to talk.
    Call on two volunteers to answer.


Introducing George Washington: The “Father of Our Country”



  • Tell students that at the time of today’s read-aloud, the American
    army was still fighting the British army.

  • Ask students: “Why is the American army fighting against the British
    army?” Remind students that the American colonies did not want to
    be ruled by the British king.

  • Ask students: “Who was the leader of the American army?” Remind
    students that George Washington was the leader of the American
    army.

  • Distribute Response Card 1 (George Washington) to each student.
    Ask volunteers to describe each image on the Response Card.
    Correct responses as necessary. Tell students that they will use this
    Response Card to discuss today’s read-aloud and in future read-
    alouds.
