FROLIC IN THE

FOXGLOVES

Victoria’s tips for
free-motion raw edge
appliqué
QAlways use small, very sharp
(preferably micro serrated)
scissors to cut out the fabric
shapes to give the best finish.
QFor a little more control, try
quilting gloves. An extension
table can also help to keep your
work flat and a Teflon sheet will
give a smoother glide.
QWhen sat at your sewing
machine, your arms should be
at right angles when stitching.
QBefore starting to sew, use
Bondaweb to attach a scrap of
fabric onto background fabric
with interfacing or batting
underneath (whichever your
project specifies). Practise
stitching to get into the flow,
to ensure that your machine is
threaded properly and your stitch

is central, trace the foxglove stems –
including the small leaves at the top,
dog rose stems and the main outline
of the badger – with a removable
marker (Victoria used a FriXion pen)
(Fig 1). Test the marker on scrap
fabric first as some markers become
permanent when heated.

Position the cushion front
right side (RS) up on top of the
batting. Then use 505 Spray or pins
to secure.

5

Stitch over the foxglove stems
multiple times with green thread
to give thickness. Fill in the small
foxglove leaves with stitches. Sew the
dog rose stems and twigs with brown
thread giving thickness to the main
stem (Figs 2A & 2B).

Using the templates, trace all
the shapes onto the paper side of
the Bondaweb as per the quantities
stated, leaving in between each
shape. Cut out roughly, leaving
