Stitchtogetherintwo(2)halves,
thenstitchthetwo(2)sections
together.Youwillbeabletoseein
eachcasewheretheseamswillmatch
up,soit is logicaltoseewheretostart
andstop,eventhough there is a hole
in the middle.

Intheoriginalblock,a circlewas
appliquéddownoverthehole.For
this,Carolynusesa freezerpaper
methodasit stabilisesthefabricwhile
it is beingsewnoverthehole.Cutout
a circleof freezerpaperthesamesize
astemplateD.Ironthisshinyside
downtothewrongsideof thefabric,
andcutoutaddingainseam
allowance.Turntheseamallowance
overtheedgeof thecircleandtackin
place.Topositionthecircleoverthe
hole,foldandfingerpresstomarkthe
quartersof thecircle.Linethese
marks up with the seam junctions on

theblock.Thiswillensurethatit is
central.Pininplaceandstitchdown
(Fig 6 ). Removethefreezerpaperby
undoingthetackingand peeling it
away from the back.

If youchoosetoputthesquare
inthecentre,pinonesideat a
time,stitchalongthenpinthenext
side,andstitch,andsoonuntilthe
four sides are complete(Fig 7 ). This

is oneof thefunthingsabouthand
piecingpatchwork,asit is soeasyto
setthingsinandstitcharoundthe
corner– thatwouldn’t work on a
sewing machine!

Pressyourblockandaddthe
frames.If youarequiltingas
yougo,youcannowlayerandbaste.
Quiltyourblocksoit is readytobe
addedtothenextrowof thequilt.
Thiswillbethefirstblockonthe
fourthrowof thequilt.If youare
buildingupyourrows,youwillsoon
be ready to stitch them together.

TECHNICALTIP
Useyourpreferredmethod
ofappliquéif youchoose
toaddthecircletothe
centre.Carolynlikesthe
freezerpapermethod,but
needle-turn,raw-edgeor
the“bagged-out”method
would work equally well.
