IN THE KITCHEN

CHECK THE REACH

“It may seem like a
no-brainer, but con-
sider your sink when
selecting a faucet,” says
Alexander, particularly
if you have an oversized
double-bowl or apron-
front sink that calls for
a far-reaching one. The
head should stretch all
the way to the sink’s
outer edge. (Most man-
ufacturers list the spout
height and hose length
in the product specs.)

SINK A HOLE-IN-ONE

Count how many holes
your sink has before
you go shopping. For
example, a three-hole
sink calls for a three-
piece faucet (a spigot
plus hot and cold
knobs), while a four-
hole sink requires all
of those, plus a soap
pump. (If you’re buy-
ing a new faucet and
sink, you’ll also want
to make sure they’ll fi t
together.)

DON’T RISK THE

DISCS All faucets have
an inner valve that
controls the water fl ow,
and these valves come
in several diff erent
types and materials.
But Alexander insists
there is only one kind
you want to shop for:
ceramic disc valves.
Why? They’re virtually
indestructible and
therefore preferred to
other kinds, like ball or
cartridge.

TRY TOUCHLESS

Hands-free operation
(where a sensor auto-
matically turns the water
on when you wave your
palm underneath) is a
newer faucet feature
Alexander recommends
considering. “Let’s face
it, we’ve all touched
raw chicken or egg
yolks and not wanted
to pass those germs
on to others,” she says.
