I’ve said many times before that I love Photoshop because it gives you the ability to be creative and
try new things. It’s a great tool for mimicking ideas and adapting others. You may have gathered from
previous tutorials that I’m a big fan of type and design, and in this issue’s tutorial we’re going to work
on just that.

FUN WITH TYPE

MAKING BROKEN VECTOR
TEXT IN PHOTOSHOP
One of the cool little tricks in Photoshop is the
ability to work with vectors, which means paths,
not pixels. Type and shapes are both vector, so
in this tutorial we’re going to create a split text
effect using type, a rectangle shape, and the
Combine Shapes tool in the Layer menu.

STEP ONE: First, create a new (File>New) 12x12"
document, at 300 dpi, in RGB Color. We’re also
going to turn on the document grid (View>
Show>Grid). Go to Photoshop (PC: Edit)>Pref-
erences>Guides, Grid & Slices, and set the
Gridline Every to 0.25 Inches and Subdivisions
to 4. Click OK.
