STEP TWO: For our type,
we’ll use an Adobe Font
called FatFrank. If you have
a Creative Cloud subscrip-
tion, just log in with your
Adobe ID, click the Activate
Font switch, and the font will
sync with Photoshop. Using
the Type tool (T), type the
words “NEW YEAR” in the
document. With the type
cursor still inserted in the
text, press-and-hold the
Command (PC: Ctrl) key,
and then drag a corner of
the text box to resize it to fit
the height of six of the larger
squares in the grid. Select
all the type with the Type
tool and set its tracking to
25 in the Character panel
(Window>Character). Then
use the Move tool (V) to
place the words near the
center of the artboard.
STEEP THREE: We need to
convert the type into vector
shapes so we can cut it
up to make our effect. To
do this, Right-click on the
type layer in the Layers
panel, and select Convert
to Shape. Double-click
its layer thumbnail in the
Layers panel to open the
Color Picker and change it
to white. Click OK to close
the Color Picker.
Click on the Add a Layer
Style icon (ƒx) at the bottom
of the Layers panel and
select Stoke. Apply a 10-px
black stroke centered on
the path of the text shape.
Click OK.
