STEP FOUR: Now we need to make
three duplicates above and three
duplicates below the original text.
To do this quickly, make the shape
layer active in the Layers panel,
hold down Shift-Option (PC: Shift-
Alt), and drag up a copy. Then
Shift-Option-drag (PC: Shift-Alt-
drag) the copy to create another
copy. Repeat once more for a third
copy. With the Move tool, drag
the layers up or down, appropri-
ately, so you can see them; the
distance between each isn’t that
critical for now as we’re going to
cut these up and then reposition
them afterwards. Now make the
original shape layer active again,
and repeat this step to create three
copies below. You should have a
total of seven shape layers.

STEP FIVE: We’ll cut the first copy
above the original text, which should
be called “NEW YEAR copy” in the
Layers panel, as it was the first
copy you made. Make sure that’s
the active layer in the Layers panel,
and use the Rectangle tool (U) to
draw a rectangle shape over the
bottom of that copy as shown here.
It should cover at least the bottom
two squares of the grid all the way
across the type. It doesn’t have to
be mathematically positioned; you
can adjust it to suit your own text.
Ensure the rectangle is also
white, and then Option-drag (PC:
Alt-drag) the word “Stroke” from one
of the other layers, and drop it on
the Rectangle layer in the Layers
panel. This will copy the 10-px black
stroke to the rectangle shape, which
it needs for this to work.
