STEP SIX: Next, we’re going to use a hidden
little gem of a tool, which is like the Pathfinder
tool found in Illustrator. We’re going to use
the rectangle to cut away the part of the text
it’s covering, leaving behind cut, but closed
letter shapes. With the Rectangle layer active,
Shift-click the NEW YEAR copy layer below
it in the Layers panel so both layers are
selected, and then go to Layer>Combine
Shapes>Subtract Front Shape.
STEP SEVEN: Now we’ve chopped our first
copy, we need to repeat the process for the
next copies above, but chop off a little more
of the text each time. For the second copy,
cut off about four grid squares, and for the
top copy, cut off about five squares. Again,
eyeballing the rectangles is fine.
STEP EIGHT: Once you’ve done the top three
shapes, repeat the whole process for the
bottom three, except cut off their top parts.
You should end up with the full text in the
center and three cut versions above and below.
