Infrared Photography: Digital Techniques
for Artistic Images, 2nd Ed.
By Laurie Klein, Shelley Vandegrift,
and Kyle Klein | Review by Peter Bauer
This book will walk you through the process of capturing images in the infrared
spectrum, from selecting a filter and/or converting a camera to infrared, through the
settings that differ from those with which you’re used to shooting, to the character-
istics of various subjects, and even how those characteristics vary with the seasons.
You can get started with infrared photography by purchasing a special filter or you
can have one of your cameras converted to full-time, infrared use. You’ll learn the
importance of the histogram, why you should capture in RAW rather than JPEG, and
the difference between lens flare and hot spots. The authors then explore and explain
infrared consideration for various landscape and nature subjects, as well as consid-
erations specific to infrared and people (including makeup and tattoos). A section
on capture and composition includes subjects such as bracketing and perspective.
Postproduction and workflow are also covered. n
