automatically gather all the images that don’t have
any copyright status applied to them.
For those days when I have some extra time
on my hands, finding these images and updating
their metadata will help bring my catalog up to
date. In my case, it’s a good thing I created this
smart collection, because I have a lot of images
in the catalog that need some copyright-metadata
love. I also made a companion smart collection for
images that do have copyright status applied. Since

USING METADATA FILTERS TO APPLY
METADATA PRESETS BY YEAR
To make use of the Needs Copyright Metadata smart
collection, I can further sort just those images by
clicking on the smart collection and then using the
Metadata option in the Filter Bar at the top of the
Library module to sort by year. Then I can review the
photos for each year, select the images that need
the information added, open the preset menu in the
Metadata panel on the right, and apply the appropriate
metadata preset. The illustration below shows this
process being applied only to the 2020 images from
the Needs Copyright Metadata smart collection.

you to apply this information to new photos you import
or, if needed, to photos that are already in your catalog.

Speaking of copyright metadata, here’s a useful tip
to help sort which images in your archive have or
don’t have this information already applied. From the
Collections panel, click the plus icon at the top right
and select Create Smart Collection. Give your new
smart collection an appropriate name, and then in
the rules section, choose Other Metadata>Copyright
Status from the first drop-down menu on the far left,
then set the second drop-down menu to “is not,”
and the third menu choice to “copyrighted.” This will
