STEP 23: Now let’s return to
the background layer to finish
up. Select the duplicate back-
ground layer we created earlier
(Background copy 2), go to the
Add a Layer Style menu at the
bottom of the Layers panel, and
choose Color Overlay. Change
the Blend Mode to Color Burn,
and lower the Opacity to around
25%. (Note: Both the Blend
Mode and Opacity will vary
depending on the image.) Click
the color swatch and when
the Color Picker opens, click
to sample a warm tone from
the original background image.
Click OK to close the Color
Picker, and OK to close the
Layer Style dialog.
STEP 24: One last thing is to
add a little more depth of field.
Select the Gradient tool once
again; make sure it’s still set
to the Black, White gradient;
and select the Linear Gradient
style icon in the Options Bar.
Press Q to activate Quick
Mask mode. Starting at the top
edge of the canvas, hold down
the Shift key and drag to the
bottom edge of the canvas. The
Shift key will restrain the gradi-
ent vertically. You should see an
amber gradient overlay. Press
Q again to go back to a regular
selection. If the bottom half of
your document is selected, go
to Select>Inverse.
