tributed to her descent into an unquenchable
sorrow. Atthe same time, the energy of
the corrupted ritual wasstill transforming her, breaking down her form from aphysical one into an entity composed of symbols, im-ages, and perceptions.
To keep herself from dissipatingentirely into
nothingness, the queen used the last ves-tiges of her
personal power to pull dead memories fromthe Shadowfell about her, creating a cloak of identitiesthat sustained her. Over centuries, those dark memoriesaccumulated and coalesced to give shape to the entitynow known as the Raven Queen.THE FORTRESS OF MEMORIESSince achieving divinity, the Raven
Queen has filledher realm with s hadows and memories, obsessively col-lecting such essences from remnants of dead gods andmortals that were strewn throughout the Shadowfell. From these metaphysical fragments she formed hernew home, a twisted
castle that the shadar-kai call theFortress
of Memories. The fortress is a mournful place, filled with incessant echoes of the past. Flocks of ravensthat act as her eyes and ears darken the skies around itwhen they emerge from within, bearing her cryptic mes-sages and omens far and wide across the multiverse.Bizarr e Menagerie. Within the Fortress of Memo-ries are trinkets and items that the Raven Queen findsirresistible, memories plucked from people's pasts thathave been invested with deep feelings of pain, sorrow, longing, guilt, or remorse. These items are brought
toher as gifts from the shadar-kai. These trinkets
caninclude furniture, clocks, mirrors, jewels, and toys. Alsoappearing in the fortress are ghostly visions of people,
places, and pets. Any of these things can
spontaneouslyappear about her lair, every object and apparition beinga metaphoric representation of some story-great orsmall- that was saturated with raw emotion.ENCOUNTERING THE RAVEN QUEENMortals that enter the Raven Queen's realm are almostinstantly
confronted with a glimpse into their own inter-nal
landscape. Because she is fascinated with emotions, the Raven Queen worms into the unconscious mindsand memories of her visitors, bringing forth visionsfrom the deepest reaches of their psyches. Some ofthese visitors are the unwitting souls of departed
peoplewho have been pulled into the Raven Queen's clutches, others are astral travelers who are caught and trappedwithin the Shadowfell by her magic- but a rare fewcome of their own volition, seeking knowledge or free-dom from a dark past.A QUEST TO THE FO RT RESS
OF MEMORIESBecause the Raven Queen has godlike
power, she can putan adventuring party
inside a demiplane that is createdfrom the
psyche of one of the characters. On entering theFortress of Memories, or encountering the Raven Queen,a character can find themselves transported to a strangefairy tale world pulled from their experiences, filled withmetaphors, parables and allegories, all of which challengethat character's frailties, fears, and desires. Much can belearned from adventuring within the fortress and under·going the Raven Queen's test, but much can also be lost. Many adventurers never return from the fortress, forevertrapped within a world created from their own experience.CHAPTE
