MY HIDDEN TALENT is playing the
guitar. I used to take it away
with me when I was ski racing
and it would live in the back
of the team van.

I LIKE TO CHILL OUT by taking
a nap. After training for
Dancing On Ice, I sometimes
go straight to bed for an hour as
soon as I get home. It means I can
have dinner without falling asleep at the
table! We train for three hours
a day and it’s very mentally
tiring. I’m actually thinking
about moving a mattress
into my dressing room!

MY PLAN B was I didn’t
have one. I left school
at 16 and I pretty much
went straight to New
Zealand for two months and
did a British Ski Team camp there
and started racing full-time. I got good
enough grades at school so that if I had
hurt myself in the first couple of years
of racing, I would have been able to go
to university, but I had no idea what I
wanted to do other than ski race. Then
by 16 years later, I’d done five Winter
Olympics and it was too late to go to
university, but I managed to work my
way into TV. Now I’ve been doing Ski
Sunday for over 20 years.

THE ADVICE I WOULD GIVE MY
16-YEAR-OLD SELF is to learn French.
I just did the easiest subjects for me at

school, like maths and the
sciences, but I haven’t
really used them. If I’d
concentrated on learning
languages and improved
my French and German, it
would have been helpful. I
wish I’d studied harder, too.

I GET REALLY ANGRY
WHEN there’s bad driving
around cyclists. It’s a
uniquely British thing and it has to stop.
We need to educate ourselves
and people must understand
they could kill someone, so
please don’t be a dick!

I’M PROUD OF completing
the Marathon des
Sables. It’s a six-day
ultramarathon and the
toughest thing I’ve
ever done physically.
I also managed to set
the Guinness World
Record for tow
speed skiing
behind a car in
Sweden a few
years ago. I went
196km per hour!

THE MOST
IMPORTANT PEOPLE
IN MY LIFE are my family.
My wife Sarah, my son Louis
and my daughter Lottie.

I’D LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED for
presenting and skiing. But probably
more presenting than my time as a
ski racer. I feel more like
a journalist than I do
an ex-athlete. I think
I’m actually better
at talking about
sport than I ever
was doing it!

MY
MOST
TREASURED
POSSESSION
is my motorbike.
It’s a Honda VFR.
It’s probably the
thing I’ve spent
the most money
on, but it’s a
non-essential
item as my
wife Sarah
would say. WORDS: KIRSTY HATCHER PHOTOS: SHUTTERSTOCK
