Classy Lights on

Winter Nights
by Blossom Jones
Sony HX90, 1/10sec at f/3.5, ISO 1600
‘This was taken on a bitterly cold
December evening,’ recalls Kettering-
based Blossom, a passionate amateur. ‘I
had driven past the historic Grade II-listed
Morgans Hotel in Swansea, a number of
times in the past few days. This was the
rst evening where the rain had stopped
and the night sky was clear, allowing
the seasonal lights which adorned this
Baroque-style building to show up clearly.
It took a while to get a shot without people
and cars, and all the while I had my
husband moaning in my ear about his feet
freezing to the pavement! No gain without
pain.’ Most of us know what it’s like to
keep an impatient spouse waiting while
we try to get the perfect shot, but
Blossom’s persistence has paid off here.

Tunnel Vision

Nikon D800, Nikon
18-35mm f/3.5-4.5, 15secs
at f/8, ISO 800
‘This was taken at some
tunnels built for storing
ammunition during WW2,
near Box in Wiltshire,’ says
Mary, a keen photographer
who enjoys long exposures.
‘The grafti is stunning. It’s a
bit creepy though and very
dark and dank. I didn’t go
alone, I hasten to add – I
went with my photo buddy
and she stood inside the
room lighting it up whilst
I used a torch to sweep the
outside. It’s a simple
technique and you don’t
need any fancy lighting, but
it takes a bit of practice.’
What could have been a
fairly dreary photo has been
made into something special
by Mary’s skilful use of
lighting. You can nd her at
