CONCEPTION
CURE
HAVING TROUBLE CONCEIVING?
Whatever you do, try not to worry.
New research published in the
American Journal of Epidemiology
has found that higher levels of stress
can cause lower levels of fertility in
women, but not men. Researchers
posit a causal link between the two,
theorizing that increased anxiety
levels cause irregular menstruation
and decreased intercourse frequency.

FAST For the win

For adults with type 2 diabetes, intermittent fasting might
be the ticket to reversing the disease or ending treatment,
according to an observational study published by the
BMJ Case Reports. Intermittent fasting is a scheduled and
prolonged period of abstaining from food, followed by a
shorter window of eating, shown to have multiple health
benefits including revving up metabolism and weight loss.
The study followed three men between the ages of 40 and
67 with type 2 diabetes as they practiced this regimen over
a period of 10 months. After one month, the men no longer
required their medically prescribed insulin injections.

BY ALEXANDRA EMANUELLI

Beginning a meal with a
soup might be the best way
to set yourself up for healthier
eating choices for the rest
of the meal. Glutamate, a
naturally occurring amino
acid in many foods and a key
component in producing the
umami flavor, has now been
shown to improve cognitive
processes including inhibitory
control. A recent study in
Neuropsychopharmacology
demonstrated that after
consuming an umami-rich
broth, individuals performed
better when self-regulating
their eating at a buffet or
generally making choices
regarding food. While
previous data has shown
that glutamate can help
reduce appetite, this one
demonstrates how. “Many
cultures around the world
advocate drinking a broth
before a meal. Our study
suggests the possibility that
people at high risk of obesity
could benefit from an umami-
rich broth before a meal
to facilitate healthy eating
and healthy food choice,”
said senior author Alonso-
Alonso, MD, PhD, an assistant
professor at the Center
for the Study of Nutrition
Medicine at Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center.
