The Flint
Christina Rossetti
An emerald is as green as grass,
A ruby red as blood;
A sapphire shines as blue as heaven;
A flint lies in the mud.
A diamond is a brillant stone,
To catch the world’s desire;
An opal holds a fiery spark;
But a flint holds fire.
About the author
Christina Rossetti was born in 1830, the
youngest in a hugely gifted family. As a
child she was passionate and given to
angry outbursts. Outwardly calm and
composed as she aged, her poetry often
hints at hidden depths of emotions, with
a vividness that made her one of the most
beloved writers of the Victorian era.
