onions, potatoes, turnips and
butternut squash for a stew... I make my favorite
lunch: ground bison with sautéed
onion and broccoli (or whatever
vegetable I have left from the
night before). Sometimes the
vegetables come from Wilson,
the chef
at Ca’Mea
Ristorante
in Hudson,
NY, which
is owned by
my friend
Max... I wash and chop the
vegetables from the farm. What
a torturous ordeal it would be to
peel the squash, so I bake them
and use the pulp as the base of
my stew, adding water, a bit of
organic Better Than Bouillon
and spices. My mom always
said, “Variety is the spice of life,”
but I’m not sure she if was
referring to basil or men, as she
did divorce my father!.. I’m on to dessert:
apple pie. My friend Russ
Bartolotta from Klein’s Kill Fruit
Farms has an orchard and bringsused Granny Smiths for pie,
but Russ assures me that the
SnapDragons he gave me have a
better flavor and the RubyFrosts
have more juice. I can’t imagine!.. David arrives home and
a discussion ensues: Are we
eating at home or eating out?
David prefers the social scene,
but I like to eat at home.
The only time I drink is when
I go out (unless I’m having
a party). When I drink, my
family calls it GG Guice, and
it’s usually
bourbon.
I even have
a custom
GG Guice
hat made
by Shelly
Lou’s Lids...
She’s my makeup artist for
the Holiday and Spring Baking
Championships, and she is much
more talented with a mascara
wand than I am... Now
I’m ready for
some GG Guice
and a fantastic
dinner. We are
on our way
to Ca’Mea to
have a taste ofof orange and lots of ice. Chef
Wilson suggests the pork rib-eye,
which is so moist and flavorful, it’s
like eating filet mignon from a pig... We’re home.
I kick off my Crocs and relax
with a Philippa Gregory saga... I go to bed. If I’m
not too tired, I’ll play Words
with Friends with my pal

.. I wake up to the
sound of my husband, David,
hunting in his closet for a shirt.
I drink a bottle of Fiji water,
then head to the kitchen
to make Bieler’s Broth, a
combination of celery,
zucchini, green beans
and parsley. I also have
two pieces of bacon, one
slice of Ezekiel toast and two
organic eggs—my daughter-
in-law Annie provides me
with fresh ones.
.. I feel fresh as a daisy—
which also happens to be my
favorite flower.
.. It’s time to figure out
what recipes to test, either for
my new cookbook, a social media
post or maybe a future dinner.
I often think about what cooks
would have made in the various
fireplaces in my historic home.
Of course they made seasonal,
nutritious food. They had no
ability to do otherwise!
.. I head to the vegetable
farm down the road, Holmquest
Farms. Tom, the young man who
owns it, is my hero. He is much
younger and thinner than I am,
and more able to bend over and
pull those onions and carrots
