There’ssome

Pentax MZ-

Don’tforget the
nineties
IenjoyedtheAP 20 April

cameras.AlthoughI’ve
useddigitalSLRsfor
sometime,I havea large
collectionof filmcameras,
allacquiredsecond-hand.
However,I feltthere
wasa categorythatwas
overlooked,butworthy
of consideration:the
consumer-level35mm
SLRof the1990s.
Thesecamerasarenot
popularwithcollectors,yet
in plentifulsupply.They
maybea bitplasticky
andnottremendously
interestingbuttheyare
cheap,andif youalready
owna DSLRof thesame
brand,you’relikelytohave
allthelensesyouneed.
I previouslyshotwitha

expensiveprospect.Not
long after it failed, I spotted

a 1996PentaxMZ-10in a
charityshop.I alreadyhad
plentyof lensesthatwould
workwithit, soI soldthe
kitzoomit camewith–
makingit evenmoreof
a bargain!
TheMZ-10is typicalof
mid’90sfilmSLRs,and
anyoneusedtoshooting
witha DSLRwon’tfacetoo
steepa learningcurve.It
canbeusedmanually,and
shootingin variousauto
modesis a breeze.Just
aboutanyPentaxK-mount

there’sa vastarrayof

goingbackaround 40 years.
A testfilmrunthrough

longafterwards,ona trip
toLondon,I waslimited

decidedtotakeonlyone

toitslightweight,and
long-lastingbattery,I took
theMZ-10,andshotmy
way through several fi lms

overthecourseof a long
weekend.I foundthe
experiencepleasantly
distraction-free,allowing
metoshooteasilyand

thinkingaboutwhetherthe

editit. I wasabletofocus

The’90smayhave
