Whopper!, 1 June).Atthe
timeit wasanythingbut
affordable.It cameoutthe
sameyearastheNikonF5,
whichwasa brilliant
cameraanda snipat a
mere£2,300– lessthan
a quarterof thepriceof an
E2.Whatwedidn’tknow
thenwasthatjustthree
yearslater,Nikonwould
introducetheD1.Even
moreinterestingis the
pricingof thevarious
accessories: £1,000 for


a 15MBPCcard(PCMCIA
cardastheywerecalledin
1996)and£750forthe
cardreader.By 2003 a
1GBIBMMicrodrivewas
availableforaround£
includinga PCMCIAcard
adapter.Anyonebuying
anE2todaywouldbewell
advisedtolookfora CF
toPCMCIAadapterrather
thanlookforPCcardsand
a reader.Findinga small
enoughCFcardtowork
withtheE2mightbe
interestingthough.Thanks

Havingreadyour
mirrorlesscameraissue
(AP 18 May)I have
concludedthattheyare
notforme,andI willstick
tomyNikonD700.The
mainreasonis thattheyall
havetoomanybellsand
whistles,mostof whichI’d
neveruse.I onlyshootstills
sothevideofacilityis
redundant.I photograph
mainlystaticlandscapes
andportraits,sothe 20
framespersecondwillalso
neverbeneeded.I always
usea tripod,soimage
stabilisationis unnecessary.
ExcusethepunbutI hope
youcan‘seethepicture’.
WhileI seewhytheeight
featuredphotographers
chose to use this type

of camera,I won’tbe
joiningthem.
It’sa pitymanufacturers
seethesegimmicksasthe
routeallpeoplewant.I
wouldlovethemtoputa
modelin theirline-up
thatusesonlyspeedand
apertureandthegreatest
facilityofferedbydigital,
theabilitytochangeISO
foreachshot.

fundamentalfactsthat

This week we pay a visit to June 1985

The underwater photographic world of Martha Holmes

EVENbytheobjectifyingstandardsof the1980s,
wearestrugglingtofindanyconnectionbetween
thecovermodelandthecoverlinesthisissue...She
definitelyisn’tfromKathmandu,oranythingtodo
withJessops.Anyway,she’sverystriking,even
thoughtheshadesandhairaredisturbingly
reminiscentof AgentSmithfromTheMatrix[you
havea sickmind– Ed].
Swimweareye-candyaside,thereis a lotof
interestingandengagingcontentin themagazine,
includinganinterviewwithintrepidunderwater
photographerMarthaHolmes(hencetherather
creaky‘newdepths’coverline),anda reviewof the
OlympusOM40SLR.Althoughit wasmanualfocus,it
hada fancyElectro-SensitivePattern(ESP)metering
system.Asthe’80sprogress,morecleverautomated
featuresstarttoappearin higherendcameras,paving
the way for the digital revolution a decade later.
