Cannock Photographic Society (CPS)
originated in 1953, when a group of
enthusiasts started a combined camera and
cine club. In 1956 the cine club members
formed a separate club, and the camera club
members eventually became known as
Cannock Photographic Society.What does the club offer to new members?
CPS has a varied program of events to cover
everyone’s interests. For new members and
those seeking to improve their photography
skills, the club offers workshops covering a
wide range of subjects. These workshops are
held by experienced club members happy to
pass on their knowledge to help new and less
experienced club members. We are lucky atCannock to have many experienced members
including four PAGB-approved judges, who
have a wealth of knowledge to pass on. We
also hold an annual exhibition so all members
can have their photos on display.Describe a typical club meeting.
A typical club night could have a competition
or a guest speaker. The club holds monthly
competitions assessed by approved PAGB
judges. Valuable critique is given with advice
on how to improve the images, thus helping
all members. The club has three classes –
from beginners to advanced – which givesall
members a chance to win awards. Listening
to a judge’s critique is one of the best waysto
improve your photography. Free refreshments
are given during the interval.Do you invite guest speakers?
Yes, guest speakers are invited to showcase
their own images and give practical adviceand
insight into how their images were achieved.
Seeing images by top photographers
inspires club members to improve their own
photography. Our guest speakers cover awide
range of photographic interests, from macro
to landscapes, so there is something of interest
to all our members.Do members compete in regional or
national competitions?
Cannock Photographic Society actively
encourages members to enter external
competitions. A number of club members
hold photographic distinctions and the club
enters all the national competitions. We are
proud that the club does very well in

waspulledoutwithoutinjury.Thisincident
highlightsoneof theadvantagesof club
outingsashadthismemberbeenonhisown,
theoutcomecouldhavebeentragic.Whataretheclub’sgoalsforthefuture?
