Grand Traverse Pie Company, Trave r s e City
Northern Michigan grows some of the best
tart cherries in the world, and when they’re at peak
ripeness in early summer, they’re picked and preserved
for Grand Traverse Pie Company’s year-round
best-selling pie, the Cherry Crumb. The National
Cherry Festival named this its signature pie.

Kern’s Kitchen, Louisville
Derby Day parties at the Melrose Inn in
Prospect, KY, were legendary in the 1950s, and

dream up a dessert that was just as fabulous.
They landed on a sticky-sweet chocolate and
walnut pie but couldn’t agree on a name—
“Derby-Pie” was pulled from a hat! The Kerns still
make the original recipe at their family bakery.
